Live at the Smell DVD

Trailer:
http://www.vimeo.com/4954219

“Featuring over 2 hours of live bands from Los Angeles and beyond, “Live at The Smell” captures the live energy that pumps through LA’s legendary independent DIY all-ages venue. Recorded in high-quality audio and video over a month period in Fall 2008, the DVD gives you the feeling of being immersed in one of the many gigs presented there each week for over 10 years. The music is clean and powerful, the footage is raw and wild, and the energy is LIVE.

“Presented on a gorgeous 6-panel Digipak with superb all-mural photographs by Wild Don Lewis and liner notes by Jim Smith (owner / operator of The Smell), “Live at The Smell” is a collector’s document, something you won’t want to miss. Even if it gets on NetFlix, even when you find it on your favorite torrent site, it won’t be the same as holding it in your hand. 6 murals are represented – featuring artists Cali deWitt, Jesse Spears, and some unknown dude from the 80s when it was a caballero bar.

“The bands featured on this movie are the cream of the indie-alt-rock / experimental bands that play the club on a regular basis: Mae Shi, Foot Village, Ponytail, Abe Vigoda, High Places, Gowns, BARR, No Age, HEALTH, Captain Ahab (in order of appearance). Culled from 20 hours of live concerts, the movie is at times slick broadcast-quality so to speak, and othertimes fuzzy and blown out, all the while with clean and loud audio, mastered by Mike Lastra. We harnessed the sun and the moon for a little while with all our mighty little cameras, and we bring you their shining lights and their madness in all our audiophonic fidelity.

“Proceeds from the sale of this DVD will help support The Smell’s operations, so buy them while you can. The Smell is a money-losing for-profit venture; its profit is in the heart of the LA freak-noise-punk-art-music scene.” – Cold Hands Video

After a recent collection of singles, EP tracks and remixes on Gilgongo, Foot Village return with their new record proper called ‘Anti-Magic’. Describing ‘Anti-Magic’ as a collection of drum essays embracing the physical and rejecting the imaginary, Foot Village rise to a concept. First album ‘World Fantasy’ was concerned with songs about other countries, whilst follow-up ‘Friendship Nation’ documented the founding of Foot Village as a nation in it’s own right.

With this new album the story of the nation’s first war is discussed. A war in opposition to magic and spirituality. A record about resistance to the heathen hordes of sorcerers, prophets and pretenders. This is not a story that Foot Village are telling to make them look like saviours though. It’s a warning to not believe everything you’re told.

Contrary to a first listen to the band’s run riot sound, Foot Village are decidedly anti-jam. Very few parts of the record are improvised and their songs are heavily worked on and involved. This can be appreciated on this new album more than ever. “Crybaby” starts apprehensively with a cowbell and cymbal rattle, until the rim shots and vocals pour in, making way for the military march gone carnival signature beat to stamp it’s presence on the song.

“TAKE” fluxes with ever-changing drum patterns and wild vocals which almost edge each other into the impossible. A hushed breakdown in the middle of the song only makes the rampaging drum assault finale more intense. Foot Village prefer to shirk novelty for an evolving attitude to song writing, with tangents traced into new territories as a rule. “Reggae War Zone” works into the song a lot of melodic vocal exchanges that punctuate the drum stampede. “Grace’s Death” almost does away with percussion completely opting for an eerie vocal workout full of lament that explores repetition.

Over the course of this war/album, Foot Village do their best to show just how brutal a drums-and-screaming-only approach can be. But, by the end of the war, the virtues of all music are revealed to them and they join hands with bands of all styles for an “It’s A Small World” version of their song “Chicken & Cheese 2″ which features a “love song” section interpreted by countless friends, including AIDS Wolf, Jason Forrest, Kyle Mabson, Narwhalz, Tussle and Death Sentence: Panda!
When pretense has been banished, freedom can take wing and the doors can be flung open to everyone. Foot Village is a nation unlike any other and only by visiting can you really know.

Fuck The Future II

Fuck The Future II – cd
2009

In anticipation of their upcoming full length “Anti Magic” on Upset the Rhythm, LA’s FOOT VILLAGE have compiled a second batch of vinyl only tracks. Four humans (you know them from Gang Wizard, Friends Forever, Rose for Bodhan and A++, and as members of 2008’s Boredoms 88 drummers performance) emerge from the apocalypse, exploring the primitive wasteland and creative a new nation of their own, using only drums and their voices. Housed in a digipack made using partially recycled material, with art work by Brittany Gould (Married In Berdichev!), “Fuck the Future 2″ collects the material from: their split LP with Black Pus (Deathbomb ARC / DNT), two recent 7”s (on Too Pure and Rock Is Hell), the “Pisspounder” triple LP (w/ Sword Heaven, Aa, Grey Skull, Rainbow Blanket and Dreamhouse also on DBA) and the recent, wild, collaboration 12” with Health, Captain Ahab and Jason Forrest on Ravesploitative,… assembled and mastered together by Pete Swanson.

Friendship Nation CD / LP / CS [our 2nd album]
2008

“These guys sure know how to make an entrance: aside from the daft industrial estate shoe shop vibes of the band name and the rudie nudie sleeve art, they’ve gone and collared all their weirdo mates for remixes at the end of the album (specifically Robedoor, Silver Daggers, Tussle and BIG A Little a), even recruiting arch filthnik Pete Swanson of Yellow Swans for mastering duties. The album kicks off with the holler “Urination!” signalling a tirade of drums, which actually sound pretty crisp and clean given that they’ve undergone the Swanson treatment. Just when you’re expecting things to develop and embrace a wider range of sound sources… they don’t. There’s a lot more shouting fun to be had though, and even some venomous barbershop tactics on ‘Erecting The Wall Of Separation’. Considering how spare the constituting elements might seem on paper, the combination of vocals and drums (all in triplicate) makes for a pretty captivating listen, brimming with excess energy and a playful destructive impulse. You sort of which all those loathsome drum troupes that stand outside your local Marks & Spencer on a Saturday afternoon would take a leaf or two out of the Foot Village book. Nudity, shouting and percussion is a winning formula.” – Boomkat

Fuck The Future CD
2007

Pure hardcore. No electricity. Fuck the future. Foot Village needs nothing but their own fists to make music, to make you scream, to make you dance, to make you thrash. An imaginary step back to a time more futuristic than now, yet shrouded in magic. Kung Fu was invented by peasants as a method of fighting so confusing to their enemies that it appeared as magic. Foot Village has invented acoustic hardcore in the same regard. If you are confused, perhaps you are the enemy. Foot Village features members of Men Who Can’t Love, Rainbow Blanket, Gang Wizard, Rose For Bohdan, and tons more. CD compiling Foot Village’s early “country” releases. Country as in songs about the countries of this world. Done as research for their current work building their own nation, Foot Village. Originally released in extremely limited edition and now sold out, all tracks have been remastered by Pete Swanson. Contains all tracks from debut 3” cdr, 7”, and World Fantasy 10”.

World Fantasy 10″ [our 1st album]
2005

In the tradition of literary greats like “Bang the Drum Slowly” and Bowie’s not so great “Little Drummer Boy,” comes Foot Village – a bleeding, screaming, catastrophe drum circle that makes hippies wish they never invited Brian, Grace, Jeff, and Greg to jam on bongos at Zuma Beach. There’s been talk of covering Les Miserables and reenacting McDonald’s commercials, but for now Foot Village is happy to document their travels in World Fantasy. It’s a deep love for harsh noise, R. Kelly, Broadway musicals, and Rush that breathes life into the band that launched a million side projects. The Drum Machines Have No Soul guy is about to wet his pants. Edition of 300.
